The penguiness database and web application aims to help scientists, educators, and the general public to better understand how deep certain animals dive. The database accumulated here comes from contributions in the peer-reviewed literature and is freely accessible and downloadable by anyone. This webpage is a scientific database where you will find official records of dive depth and duration for most diving species of vertebrates. This could be a max-average, average, median value. This field is in METERS. 'depth type' = The type of depth value recorded from the source (i.e. max-average, average, median, etc..) 'sd depth' = The standard deviation (if recorded) of the depth value reported 'max depth' = The maximum depth recorded during the study (in METERS) 'sample size depth' = The number of individuals whose dive depths were recorded 'depth measurement unit' = The type of individuals whose dive depths were recorded (e.g., their breeding stage, sex, etc...) 'duration' = The duration of the dives as recorded in the paper. This could be a max-average, average, median, etc... in SECONDS 'duration type' = The type of duration value recorded from the source (i.e., max-average, average, median, etc...) 'sd duration' = The standard deviation (if recorded) of the duration value reported 'max duration' = The max duration of a dive from the source (in SECONDS) 'sample size duration' = The number of individuals whose dive durations were recorded 'duration measurement unit' = The type of individuals whose dive durations were recorded (e.g., their breeding stage, sex, etc...) 'methods' = Methods used to measure either dive depth or duration 'source' = The reference / citation of the original data source 'note' = Any additional notes relevant to the record|All the data in Penguiness are taken from peer-reviewed publications, reports and conference proceedings and the methods vary accordingly. The methods can be viewed in the original papers, or brief summaries are available in the 'methods' column of the reference table.||Spatial and temporal scales vary for each source.
